Meraj un nabi

Dear brothers and sisters in Islam, let us begin by sending salutations and blessings upon the luminous presence of the Beloved of Allah, the Intercessor on the Day of Judgment, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. O Allah, send Your peace, blessings, and mercy upon our master, our beloved, and the light of our hearts, Muhammad ﷺ, and upon his family and companions.

The miraculous journey of Al-Isra wal-Miraj (The Night Journey and Ascension) is one of the most extraordinary and awe-inspiring events in the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is a testament to his unparalleled status and the divine honor bestowed upon him by Allah Almighty. This miraculous event, which took place in the eleventh year of Prophethood (approximately 621 CE), on the 27th night of Rajab, is a unique distinction granted to the Prophet ﷺ, elevating him above all other Prophets and Messengers.

Allah Almighty mentions this event in the Qur’an:
“Glory be to Him who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.” (Surah Al-Isra: 1)

Scholars agree that this verse refers to the physical journey of the Prophet ﷺ, which occurred while he was awake. During this miraculous journey, the Prophet ﷺ was taken from Masjid al-Haram in Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, and from there, he ascended through the heavens to the highest realms of existence, witnessing the divine signs and wonders of Allah’s creation.

Dear brothers and sisters, the Prophet ﷺ was taken on this miraculous journey in a brief portion of the night. He traveled from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa, and from there, he ascended through the heavens, reaching the Sidrat al-Muntaha (the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary) and beyond, to a station where no other creation has ever reached. He witnessed the Throne, the Divine Tablet, the Pen, Paradise, Hell, and countless other signs of Allah’s majesty. He was honored with the vision of Allah’s divine presence and returned to earth, bearing gifts and blessings for his Ummah.

Allah describes this event in the Qur’an:
“By the star when it descends, your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred.” (Surah An-Najm: 1-2)
Scholars interpret the “star” in this verse as a reference to the Prophet ﷺ and his descent back to earth after the Ascension.

During this journey, the Prophet ﷺ experienced divine proximity and witnessed the manifestations of Allah’s glory and majesty. Allah says:
“And he was at the highest horizon. Then he drew near and came closer, until he was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. And He revealed to His servant what He revealed.” (Surah An-Najm: 7-10)

The Prophet ﷺ’s vision was unwavering, and he beheld the greatest signs of his Lord:
“The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress. He certainly saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord.” (Surah An-Najm: 17-18)

The Prophet ﷺ narrated the events of the Night Journey, saying:
“While I was lying in the Hatim (near the Kaaba), an angel came to me, split open my chest, and removed my heart. Then, a golden basin filled with faith was brought, and my heart was washed and filled with faith before being returned to its place. After that, a white animal, smaller than a mule but larger than a donkey, was brought to me. I mounted it, and Jibreel (Gabriel) led me to the heavens.” (Sahih Bukhari)

When the Prophet ﷺ shared the details of this miraculous journey with the people of Makkah, the disbelievers mocked him and spread falsehoods about the event. Abu Jahl, in particular, ridiculed the Prophet ﷺ and gathered people to discredit him. He even approached Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, “Your companion claims that he traveled to Jerusalem and ascended to the heavens in a single night. Do you believe this?” Abu Bakr replied, “If he has said this, then it is undoubtedly true. I believe in matters far greater than this.” This unwavering faith earned Abu Bakr the title of As-Siddiq (the Truthful).

To challenge the Prophet ﷺ, the Quraysh asked him to describe Masjid al-Aqsa. The Prophet ﷺ, who had not memorized all its details, became momentarily distressed. However, Allah Almighty brought the image of Masjid al-Aqsa before his eyes, and he described it in precise detail, answering every question posed by the Quraysh.

During the Ascension, Allah initially prescribed fifty daily prayers for the Muslim Ummah. On his way back, the Prophet ﷺ met Musa (peace be upon him), who advised him to request a reduction, as his Ummah would not be able to bear such a burden. The Prophet ﷺ repeatedly returned to Allah, seeking reductions, until the number of prayers was reduced to five. Despite this reduction, the reward remains equivalent to fifty prayers.

The Night Journey offers countless lessons and insights. Among them is the importance of Salah (prayer), as it was the only act of worship directly gifted to the Prophet ﷺ during this miraculous event. The Prophet ﷺ also witnessed the consequences of various sins, such as neglecting prayer, dishonesty, and immorality. For instance, he saw people whose heads were being crushed repeatedly—these were those who were negligent in their prayers. He also saw individuals carrying heavy burdens they could not bear, symbolizing those who betray trusts.

The Prophet ﷺ also encountered those who consumed pure, wholesome food but abandoned it for foul, rotten food. This represented those who leave lawful relationships for unlawful ones. These vivid scenes serve as warnings and reminders for the Ummah to adhere to the teachings of Islam and avoid sinful behavior.

The Prophet ﷺ also learned about the virtue of voluntary prayers during the Night Journey. He heard the footsteps of Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) in Paradise and later asked him about the deed that earned him this honor. Bilal replied, “I do not consider any deed more hopeful than this: whenever I perform ablution, I pray as much as Allah wills for me.”

During the journey, the Prophet ﷺ met Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who conveyed a message for the Ummah:
“O Muhammad, convey my greetings to your Ummah and tell them that Paradise has fertile soil and sweet water, but it is a barren land. Its plantations are the words: SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah), Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah), and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest).”

Dear brothers and sisters, the Night Journey and Ascension of the Prophet ﷺ is a profound reminder of the mercy and blessings of Allah. It teaches us the importance of prayer, the consequences of our actions, and the boundless love Allah has for His beloved Prophet ﷺ. Let us strive to follow the teachings of Islam, perform our prayers diligently, and seek Allah’s forgiveness for our shortcomings.

O Allah, grant us the ability to perform our prayers with devotion, protect us from sins, and bless us with the virtues and blessings of the Night Journey. O Allah, make us among those who follow the path of righteousness and earn Your pleasure. Ameen.

May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his family, and his companions. All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.
