Islamic Teaching about Sports

Brothers in faith! Worship holds a unique status in Islam. To fulfill it properly, one must be physically healthy and energetic, whether it is prayer, fasting, Hajj, or other acts of worship and Sport. Health is among Allah’s greatest blessings. This is why Allah prefers a strong believer over a weak one. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“A strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak believer.” (Sahih Muslim)

Physical exercise is essential for strength and vitality. Hence, sports that enhance agility and strength are permissible if intended for exercise. However, sports devoid of physical benefit or those that offer no worldly or spiritual benefit are impermissible.

Islam is not a rigid religion that forbids all forms of recreation. Numerous hadiths mention sports that are not only permissible but encouraged. A few examples include:

Archery is a beloved sport in Islam, as it strengthens nerves, trains the body, and prepares for jihad. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Every activity of a Muslim is futile except three: (1) Archery, (2) Training his horse, and (3) Playful interactions with his wife. These are valid (righteous acts).” (Sunan Ibn Majah)
He emphasized: “Strength lies in archery!” (Sahih Muslim)
In modern times, archery extends to target practice with guns, missiles, or rockets for defensive purposes.

Raising horses for jihad is highly rewarded. Allah says:
“Prepare against them whatever you can of power, including steeds of war, to terrify the enemies of Allah and your enemies.” (Quran 8:60)
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Whoever keeps a horse ready for Allah’s cause, its food, water, and dung will weigh in his scales on Judgment Day.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Running is an excellent exercise. The Prophet (ﷺ) raced with his wife, Aisha (رضی اللہ عنہا), demonstrating its merit.

Practicing spear combat for jihad is a Sunnah. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Whoever holds a spear in Allah’s path, Allah will shield him from sins on Judgment Day.” (Al-Mu’jam al-Awsat)

Swimming is a full-body workout and vital for survival. The Prophet (ﷺ) included it among permissible activities. Caliph Umar (رضی اللہ عنہ) advised:
“Teach your children writing and swimming.”

Islam condemns wasteful pastimes. Allah says:
“The life of this world is nothing but play and amusement, but the Home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah. Will you not then understand?” (Quran 6:32)
A true believer avoids frivolity:
“Those who turn away from ill speech.” (Quran 23:3)

Sadly, Muslims today neglect Islamically endorsed sports while embracing Western games that harm our faith, economy, and future. Key issues include:

Long matches (e.g., cricket, hockey) lead to missed prayers and fasting. Public immodesty (e.g., revealing swimwear) violates Islamic principles of modesty.

Western capitalists profit from ticket sales, broadcasting rights, and merchandise, draining Muslim wealth while indebting nations through IMF/World Bank loans.

Excessive sports obsession stifles study, research, and reflection—qualities that once made Muslims pioneers in science and ethics.

Youth squander precious hours on games, jeopardizing their worldly and eternal success.

Islam permits sports that align with Shariah and serve a purpose (e.g., health, defense). However, modern sports culture promotes negligence, immodesty, and economic dependency. Muslims must revive Sunnah-based activities, prioritize worship, and protect their time, wealth, and values.

O Allah! Make our lives compliant with Your teachings. Grant us the ability to learn sports for jihad and exercise. Protect us from forbidden games. Accept our prayers through Your Beloved (). Purify our hearts, unite us, and make us steadfast in prayer. Bless our nations with prosperity, and heal our sick. Ameen!
