Dajjal and the Signs of the End Times in Islam

In an age of misinformation, moral confusion, and global uncertainty, the Prophetic warnings about the greatest trial before the Day of Judgment feel more relevant than ever. Islam teaches that one of the most dangerous and deceptive trials humanity will face is the emergence of the False Messiah—al-Masih ad-Dajjal.

This is not merely a distant theological concept; it is a reality that every believer is urged to understand, prepare for, and guard against. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ repeatedly warned his الأمة (Ummah) about Dajjal’s فتنة (trial), emphasizing its severity and deception.

This comprehensive guide explores who Dajjal is, his characteristics, signs before his ظهور (emergence), and how believers can protect themselves from his fitnah—based on authentic Qur’anic insights and Hadith.

The term Dajjal comes from the Arabic root dajl, meaning:

  • To deceive
  • To conceal truth
  • To spread falsehood

In Islamic theology, Dajjal refers to the False Messiah (al-Masih ad-Dajjal), a major sign of the Day of Judgment (Qiyamah). He will appear in the آخر الزمان (end times), claiming divinity and leading people astray through deception and extraordinary abilities.

Clarifying the Term “Masih”

  • Dajjal: “Masih” (passive) → one whose eye is wiped (defective)
  • Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام: “Masih” (active) → one who heals by touch

There is no contradiction between the two titles.

The Prophet ﷺ described Dajjal in vivid detail to prevent confusion:

“The Dajjal is a short man, bow-legged, with curly hair, and one eye is defective…” (Muslim)

“His right eye is like a floating grape.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

  • One-eyed (right eye defective)
  • Curly hair
  • Heavy-built body
  • Reddish complexion
  • The word “Kafir” (disbeliever) written between his eyes

Scholars explain that this writing will be visible to true believers, regardless of literacy.

A famous narration from Tamim al-Dari رضي الله عنه describes an encounter with Dajjal on a remote island.

“We found a huge man… chained… he said: ‘I am Dajjal, soon I will be permitted to emerge.’” (Muslim)

  • Dajjal is currently alive but restrained
  • Located in a remote region (possibly toward the East)
  • Awaiting divine permission to emerge

Dajjal will not appear randomly. Several signs must occur before his emergence.

“Before Dajjal, there will be years of deception…” (Ibn Majah)

  • Truth will be rejected
  • Liars will be believed
  • Trust will be misplaced
  • Ignorant people will lead society

“The great war, the conquest of Constantinople, and then the emergence of Dajjal…” (Abu Dawood)

  • Arabia
  • Persia
  • Rome

Only after these will Dajjal emerge.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Dajjal will emerge from the East, from a land called Khurasan.” (Tirmidhi)

  • Region includes parts of modern Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia
  • Followed initially by large groups, especially from certain اليهود (Jews)

Dajjal’s fitnah will be the greatest ever faced by humanity.

“From the creation of Adam until the Hour, no trial is greater than Dajjal.” (Muslim)

  • Command rain and crops
  • Travel rapidly across the earth
  • Bring apparent “heaven and hell”
  • Revive (appear to revive) the dead
  • Control resources and food

“He will say to the sky: rain, and it will rain…” (Muslim)

  • These are tests from Allah
  • His “paradise” is actually hell
  • His “hell” is actually salvation

“He will remain for 40 days: one day like a year, one like a month, one like a week…” (Muslim)

  • Total duration: 40 days
  • First 3 days unusually long
  • Remaining days normal

Before and during Dajjal’s time:

  • Severe drought and famine
  • Food and water controlled by Dajjal
  • Believers survive on dhikr (remembrance of Allah)

“Their food will be tasbeeh, tahmeed, and takbeer.”

Dajjal will enter every place except:

  • Makkah
  • Madinah

“He will not enter Madinah; angels guard its gates.” (Bukhari)

  • Hypocrites and disbelievers will leave the city
  • True believers will remain

The Prophet ﷺ gave clear guidance.

“Whoever hears of Dajjal should stay away from him…” (Abu Dawood)

“Whoever memorizes the first 10 verses of Surah al-Kahf will be protected.” (Muslim)

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the trial of Dajjal.”

  • Knowledge of Tawheed
  • Understanding Allah’s attributes
  • Avoiding deception

Dajjal’s reign ends with the return of Isa ibn Maryam عليه السلام.

  • Isa عليه السلام will descend from the heavens
  • Join Muslims in battle
  • Kill Dajjal near Ludd (Lod, Palestine)

“He will pursue him and kill him at the gate of Ludd.” (Muslim)

“He will melt like salt in water…”

Scholars explain:

  • The Qur’an mentions signs of the Hour generally
  • Details are explained through Hadith
  • This highlights the importance of Sunnah

“Three signs—when they appear, faith will not benefit…” (Muslim)

  • Rising of the sun from the West
  • Dajjal
  • Beast of the earth

  • Not every powerful figure is divine—question false claims
  • Media manipulation resembles “years of deception”
  • Faith must be grounded in knowledge, not emotion
  • Preparation is spiritual, not just physical

Yes, based on authentic Hadith, Dajjal is alive but restrained until Allah permits his emergence.

Yes, he will falsely claim divinity and perform deceptive miracles.

No, both cities are protected by angels.

40 days, with the first days being unusually long.

Prophet Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام will kill him.

  • Recite Surah al-Kahf
  • Make dua
  • Stay away from him
  • Strengthen ایمان (faith)

Not explicitly, but his signs are referenced and explained in Hadith.

The trial of Dajjal is not just a future event—it is a test of ایمان, discernment, and تعلق with Allah. The Prophet ﷺ did not merely inform us about Dajjal; he prepared us.

In a world already filled with deception, المؤمن (believer) must anchor themselves in truth, knowledge, and sincere عبادت.
